Wind Chimes
Sitting outside and listening to the gentle sounds of wind chimes tinkling is one of the small pleasures in life. But what exactly are wind chimes, and what types are available? Read on to learn more.
What are Wind Chimes?
Wind chimes are simply outdoor mobiles that produce a pleasant sound when hit by a breeze. Most common wind chimes are made of tubular pipes of metal or wood that are suspended from an o-ring. The pipes are different lengths and are solid or hollow. When the wind hits the chimes, the tubes bump one another and this causes the sounds to be produced. Some chimes use a central pendulum that works like a bell clapper in order to keep the chimes tinkling.
Types of Wind Chimes
There is a huge range of styles and materials to choose from when it comes to wind chimes. They are most commonly made from bamboo, metal, stained glass, or wood. Metal chimes include those that are made from brass, copper, or pewter and these produce a beautiful sound. Other metal or wood chimes are made from bells that tinkle when a breeze moves them. Yet other chimes are made from metal tubing or discs that are shaped to resemble things such as animals and flowers. The larger metal chimes produce deeper tones while smaller ones play a soft melody. Wind chimes can be selected to show an interest or you can choose a traditional set. Classic wind chimes are great for meditation and prayer. Bamboo or wood chimes are great for the home gardener as they are durable and attractive, so look great hung from a pergola or other outdoor structure.
