A belt sander is any kind of sander that has a continuous loop of sandpaper running through the machine. These sanders can be handheld, table-mounted, or on the floor. The electric belt sander has an electrical motor that turns a pair of drums on which the loop of sandpaper is mounted. Handheld sanders are where you move the sander over the material to be sanded. Table-mounted and floor sanders are where you move the material to the sanding belt. These stationary sanders are often combined with a disc sander.
Electric belt sanders are great for the initial stages of a sanding project, where the work is rougher. They quickly sand the material down. They are ideal for removing exterior paint, hitting high spots on wooden flooring, removing extra wood material and so forth. Because they can have an aggressive action, they are best used in the beginning stages of a sanding project or to rapidly remove material. They can also be used to remove paint or finishes from wood. Due to space limitations, these sanders are not great for getting close to interior walls.
When using the electric belt sander, you need to be aware of the sandpaper that you are using. Sandpaper is available in various grits, which are identified by specific numbers. The higher the number, the finer the grit, and the smoother the finish you will get. The most common approach to sanding is to start with a lower grit or coarser paper and move on to finer sandpaper until the desired results are achieved.
