Waste and Pollution Treatment

Waste and pollution treatment is the process by which potentially hazardous waste is stored or treated in order to minimise their leaching into and impact upon the environment.  Read on to learn more about waste and pollution treatment methods.

Types of Waste and Pollution Treatment

Some types of waste and pollution treatment are as follows:

• Agricultural wastewater treatment – is the treatment and disposal of liquid animal waste, pesticide residue, and so forth from agriculture.

• Industrial wastewater treatment – is the treatment of wet waste from manufacturing and commerce.  Industries include mining and heavy industry.

• Sewage treatment – the treatment and disposal of human waste.  It can be left to compost naturally or is treated with processes that separate solid materials by settlement and then converting soluble contaminants into biological sludge and gases such as carbon dioxide or methane.

• Composting – the decaying of organic matter to produce compost.  Composting can be done in the home or on a larger scale, as in industrial composting.  Industrial composting is becoming more popular as a waste management alternative to landfills.

• Incineration – involves the combustion of organic materials or substances.  The waste is converted into incinerator bottom ash, flue gases, particulates, and heat, which can be used to generate electric power. It can also be used without energy and materials recovery.

• Landfills – colloquially known in Australia as a “dump”, is where waste material is disposed of through burial.  They are also used for other waste management purposes such as the temporary storage, consolidation and transfer, or processing of waste material – e.g. sorting, treatment, recycling.

• Windrow composting – the production of compost by piling organic matter or other biodegradable waste in long rows, called windrows.  This can produce large amounts of compost.

• Anaerobic digestion – is a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material without oxygen.  It is commonly used to treat wastewater sludges and organic waste.  It reduces the emission of landfill gas into the atmosphere.

• Gasification – converts carbon based materials such as coal or biomass into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by reacting the raw materials at high temperatures with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam.  The resulting mixture is an energy source in itself.

• Mechanical biological treatment systems – is a type of waste processing facility that combines a sorting facility with a type of biological treatment such as composting or anaerobic digestion.  They are designed to process mixed household waste as well as commercial and industrial waste.

• Mechanical heat treatment – commonly called autoclaving, involves a mechanical sorting stage followed by some form of thermal treatment.
