Wall Hangings

Are you looking for something different to use as a decorative element in your home? Why not consider a wall hanging? They’re different, come in all shapes and sizes, and you’re bound to find one that’s perfect for you.

What is a Wall Hanging?

A wall hanging is a decoration that is hung on a wall or over windows. The orientation of the hanging means that it is usually hung vertically in order to correctly display the different elements of the hanging.

Wall hangings can be used in any area of the home – from the living areas to the bedroom, and even outdoors. It is just a matter of choosing the right hanging for the right area. For example, you would not want to use a fabric wall hanging as a bathroom accessory but a metal or stone hanging may be ideal.

Your wall hanging should be placed in an area that is brightly lit but not in direct sunlight. The wall should be contrasting in shade and/or colour to the wall hanging. Never place it near a heater or air conditioning and ensure that you can see it up close as well as from a distance.

Types of Wall Hangings

When thinking of wall hangings, most people typically think of a large piece of fabric that has been hung. However, there is much more to choose from. While they are usually fabric, wall hangings can also be:

  • tapestry
  • wool
  • wood
  • leather
  • natural fibres such as jute
  • outdoor
  • quilted
  • metal
  • brass
  • outdoor
  • wall hanging plant holders
  • indian/Balinese etc

The above list shows that wall hangings come in a huge range of colours, styles, designs, and so forth. You can opt for a traditional tapestry, or go to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and opt for a contemporary, abstract pattern.

Hanging a Wall Hanging

Most wall hangings can be hung using a rod or Velcro. Depending on the material, some will need to be hung in the same manner as a picture frame is – such as if it is metal, or stone. Hanging rods can be easily purchased at any store that sells drapery hardware – the hardware store, department store, or drapery store. You can buy the rods alone or you can choose decorative end treatments called finials. If using Velcro, simply attach Velcro to the top back edge of your wall hanging and place the corresponding Velcro tabs on the wall or on a wooden strip.
