Electricity is a vital part of any home, but it is possible to use electricity in a way that does not use fossil fuels and thus harm the environment. Green electricity is electricity that has been produced in a way that does not create greenhouse gas emissions. It may be solar, hydro, biomass or wind energy.
If you choose to switch to green electricity, your household electricity will no longer come from coal fired power stations, but rather from renewable sources. The way you receive your electricity will not change – you will still receive your electricity from the normal power grid. However, you will likely have to pay a small additional charge on your electricity bill in order to be able to use green electricity.
Switching to green electricity is simple. It is simply a matter of calling your existing electricity supplier and asking to switch to renewable energy. When purchasing green electricity, ensure that it has the Green Power accreditation logo. This will ensure that the energy is sourced from installed facilities to encourage growth in the generation of renewable energy.
Green electricity is offered from anywhere from 10 percent to 100 percent. If you choose 100 percent green electricity, all of the electricity used in your home will come from renewable sources. Similarly, if you choose 20 percent green electricity, 20 percent of the electricity that you consume in your home will come from renewable sources.
