Using Colour in Your Home

Colour is a vital part of any home, and choosing the right colours is the most difficult part of any painting project in the home.  Colour affects a person on all levels, aesthetically, atmospherically, mentally, and spiritually, and it completely changes the look of a home so it is important to use colour to its best effect.

Using Colour Schemes in the Home

When creating a colour scheme in your home, it is extremely easy to become overwhelmed by the vast array of choices out there.  You could choose to utilise the services of a professional such as an interior decorator or you could simply take your cue from what surrounds you.  The new couch you bought, a favourite ornament, the colour of your favourite flower – these can all provide the perfect starting point for your colour palette.

There are three main types of colour schemes.  Monochromatic colour schemes are when varying tones of the one colour are used.  Complementary schemes are when colours that are opposite to each other on the colour wheel are used.  An example of this would be red and green.  The contrast can then be used to fantastic effect.  Related colour schemes are when colours that are side by side on the colour wheel are used.  This could be grouping together greens and blues for example.  This creates a relaxing, harmonious effect.

Colour and Feng Shui in the Home

Colour can have an important impact upon a person’s Feng Shui, and it is thusly important to use the correct colours within a home.  The most important thing to do is to choose colours that have a personal meaning to you.  However, recognise that there are energies associated with these colours and you will need to ensure that the energies are in balance to keep your home feeling harmonious.  The five main or primary colours that can be used in Feng Shui are:

  • Black or blue – these colours represent the energy of water, and help people to concentrate, and handle creative activities. Blue in particular can be used to create a feeling of privacy and is calming.
  • Green – represents the wood energy and thus signifies growth, action, and can be used to stimulate internal change.
  • Red – is the fire energy and is the colour of passion of love.  It can also be used to alleviate depression and increase activity levels.
  • Yellow – is the earth energy and improves levels of hope, as well as mental activity.  It also creates a feeling of stability.
  • White/metallic colours – represent the metal energy and support purity, focus, and encourage people to be careful.
