Tree Shapes

Trees are an important addition to any backyard – they look beautiful as well as providing valuable shade.  One way to ensure that you have the right kinds of trees for the space in your backyard is to look at different tree shapes.

Types of Tree Shapes

There are several different tree shapes that you can find amongst different types of trees.  Your landscaper or nurseryman will be able to help you to identify the shape of the tree as it matures.  Some common tree shapes include:

• V-shaped
• Columnar
• Pyramidal
• Round
• Oval
• Full-crowned
• Vase
• Fountain
• Spreading
• Layered
• Weeping

Why Tree Shapes are Important

The shape of the tree will help you answer many questions that you may have about whether a certain tree is right for your property.  It will tell you how well the tree will fit the space that it is intended for; what problems you might face during the life of the tree; and if the tree will meet the goals that you want (aesthetics, shade provider, etc).

Selecting the right shape of tree means that you can significantly reduce the amount of time you spend looking after the tree, and also ensure that the tree has optimal value in your landscape.  A small spreading tree may be fantastic for areas that have overhead power lines, while a columnar tree is fantastic for screening.

Why Do Tree Shapes Differ?

Tree shapes differ for a number of different reasons.  If the soil is not nutrient-rich enough, the tree may suffer stunted growth.  If the tree is growing next to building, there may be more leaves on the side that receives the most sun.  Different trees have their own shapes, but the shape of each individual tree is affected by where it is growing.  The location also plays a factor.  For example, trees in areas with overhead sun tend to have flat treetops or crowns in order to catch more light.  In areas where the sunlight is lower in the sky, trees tend to be cone shaped in order to try and catch as much light as possible.
