Tap Water Filters

Don’t like the thought of drinking tap water but don’t want to spend a fortune on bottled water? Tap water filters may be the perfect solution for you. Read on to find out more.

Why Use an On Tap Water Filter?

On tap water filters are great as they do the same job as may larger and more expensive units. Not to mention, their size and portability means that you can take it with you if you move or go away on holidays. Wherever you go, you will have clean water. The filter will remove the overwhelming majority of chlorine, lead, sediment, asbestos, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, odours, and bacteria from the water, making it clean and safe to drink. Less than a percent of harmful substances typically remain.

Installing an On Tap Water Filter

The on tap water filter system is installed on taps that have a removable aerator and a standard Australian metric thread. It’s perfect for taps that use mixer levers or the conventional twist taps. The system is made up of two parts, a base unit and a replaceable filter. The base unit screws directly to the tap, but you may need to use an adaptor depending on if you have a male or female thread. The filter is then placed into the base. Never install the filter until you have attached the base unit to the tap.

With a tap water filter, the water flow will be slower than it otherwise is. The typical flow rate is 6-10 litres a minute while the flow rate through a filter is around 2-3 litres a minute. You should not need a plumber to install the filter, as the system is sold with all of the necessary adaptors, washers, and accessories, as well as clear instructions. Most on tap filters don’t even require any tools.

Activating and Maintaining the On Tap Water Filter

Once you have installed the filter, you should allow water to run through it for five minutes to activate it. Every time the filter is used thereafter, allow the water to run for five seconds. If you haven’t used it for a few days, run it for 30 seconds. This will reactivate the filter. It is recommended that hot water does not go through the filter as hot water will not be effectively filtered. There is an indicator on some systems that will let you know when the filter needs to be replaced. Filters can last for up to twelve months, depending on the level of usage. It is important that you monitor the quality of your water and replace the filter as soon as you notice any changes.
