Tables are a part of every home, and also one of the most used items of furniture. It makes sense to look for a table that not only meets your needs but looks fantastic as well. Read on to learn more.
Tabletops are extremely versatile and used in so many applications that it makes sense that there are almost no limits when it comes to the materials that they can be made out of. Some of the most common materials for tabletops include:
• plastics
• glass
• wood
• steel
• stone
• manufactured stone
• laminates
• tiles
• mosaic tiles
What type of table are you after? You may only require a small corner table or you may need a large table that is capable of seating several people. Is it in an area that you use regularly or will it be more of a decorative element such as in a formal area? These kinds of questions will determine firstly the materials that you use, then the size of table, and finally, the design and colour of the table. You want a table that will fit in with the rest of your décor. Alternatively, it could become the focal point of the whole room so it is important that you get it right. You really are limited only by your imagination.
How long your tabletop lasts will be determined by the material that you choose and the amount of maintenance that you are prepared to undertake. For example, a properly sealed wooden table will last for years but it will need to be cleaned and resealed regularly. A plastic or stone outdoor table will last for years and only require minimal maintenance such as the occasional cleaning. Glass tabletops look fantastic but they may not be the best choice for a family home as there is the safety aspect to consider.
You are not limited to buying tabletops or tables that are readymade. With a little bit of know-how, you can build your own, or have one made for you. If you are after a custom design to perfectly fit in with your interior or exterior décor, this is the perfect option for you. Tabletops can be made from things that otherwise would have been scraps – think mosaics, or cut off pieces of wood. You can use a sheet of tempered glass set in a frame, or even an old door that has been beautifully polished with a sheet of glass set over the top to protect it. You could even opt to have a box made and fill the box with your favourite materials – like a box photo frame. Have a look at the materials that you have available to you and let your imagination run wild.
