Skirting boards, along with architraves, are important as they create an overall framework for your home. Read more about skirtings here.
Skirtings can also be known as baseboards and they serve as a trim or a finishing moulding where the floors meet the walls. As well as the decorative element, skirtings protect the walls from scuffs and everyday wear and tear.
Skirting boards are traditionally fixed using “grounds”. This is where strips of wood are attached to the wall and act as a fixing base for the boards that are placed over them. A continuous trip is supported at regular intervals by small upright pieces called “soldiers”. In modern homes, skirtings are fixed using masonry nails which are hammered at an angle through the board into the brickwork, or with adhesives to stick them onto the walls.
As well as creating a framework for your home, skirting boards create a theme within your home and for your furniture. Skirting boards may be streamlined for a more modern, contemporary look, or be more decorative if you are after a traditional feel.
Skirting boards come in various types and sizes. They are generally made from wood, MDF, or even plaster. Older houses generally have moulded skirting boards and these are not always available. If you find it difficult to match the skirting, try fitting a moulded architrave to the top of a square-edged board. This will save you having to replace the skirting boards throughout the entire home.
You can also buy pre-finished skirting boards. These require no sanding or painting – simply measure, cut, and glue and they are installed. These suit any type of floor covering, do not warp, are available in long lengths, are highly durable, and have extremely stable colours.
There is also a new type of skirting board system that is actually removable, allowing you to see inside the wall cavities and check for termites. This is excellent for termite prevention, to find what would otherwise be a hidden infestation that you would not know about.
