Whether in the kitchen or the bathroom, the sink is one of the most used items. Therefore it is important that you get a sink that is capable of handling all the tasks that you do on a regular basis. Read our guide to find out more.
Sinks are available in a range of sizes and configurations, and can come with one, two, or even three bowls. The bowls may be deep or shallow, have straight or sloping walls, and come with offset drains, under counter mounts, tile edging or self rimming. Just some of the materials they are made from include Corian, cast iron, porcelain, stainless steel, stone, vitreous china, brass, nickel, copper, marble, and glass. They can come in just about any colour and will fit a variety of taps, though no sink can accommodate all of the types of taps out there.
There are several different types of sinks that you can choose for your kitchen, in a variety of styles. Some of the most common types of sinks are:
• Under mounted – these create a smooth look that blend with modern kitchen designs. The bowl is attached underneath the countertop and no rim shows above the countertop.
• Integral – this is where the sink and the countertop are made from the same material – such as stone or another solid surface. There are no visible seams and it is a sleek, modern, and low maintenance design.
• Self rimming or flush mounted – this type of sink has a rolled edge which is mounted over the countertop. Because the rim sits on top of the countertop, its overall dimensions are larger than the actual opening for the sink bowl. This type of sink suits any décor.
• Rimmed – these sinks require a flat metal strip to seat the sink to the countertop. It is the cheapest and most common sink design, and is multipurpose.
• Tile in – as the name suggests, these sinks are used with tiled countertops and are designed to mount even with a tiled surface, so that there is no visible separation between the sink and the surface.
Bathroom sinks offer an even greater range of designs than kitchen sinks do. They are available in a virtually infinite range of colours, patterns, styles, designs, heights, widths, depths, and materials. Common types of bathroom sinks include:
• Wall mount – these sinks are made with an integrated splashback and hang on a bracket. The basin is hung from the wall at the desired height and can be mounted flush to the wall, recessed, or semi-recessed. These sinks provide barrier-free access.
• Console table – a table like fixture supported by ornamental legs or brackets, and is great for giving your bathroom an open, airy feel.
• Vanity – the vanity is the sink that is installed into the bathroom cabinet and is great as you get the sink as well as valuable storage and counter space.
• Pedestal – the pedestal sink is a basin that is primarily supported by a freestanding pedestal leg. It’s an excellent choice if you have a small bathroom. It is also easy to clean around.
• Vessel – the vessel sink is an above counter sink that installs partially into the counter and is designed to sit on top of the counter. They give your bathroom an elegant, unique look and are easier than most sinks to replace, should you want to renovate in the future.
