Determined to turn your disorganised life around and create a home where everything has its own place? No more hunting among piles of clutter for that one thing that you need! However, it’s hard to get organised. That’s why I went in search of some great secrets to get me started. Hopefully they’re helpful to you too!
Secret One: Be Ruthless
If you’re one of those people like me who like to hang onto things way past their use by date, this could just be the most useful secret you’ll ever learn and that is to be ruthless! Go through the stuff that you already have and chuck out anything you don’t use and aren’t likely to use. This could be clothes that haven’t been in fashion for ten years, broken kitchen goods, whatever. You can’t get organised properly if you’re trying to work with years of clutter.
Secret Two: Create Places for Everything
When you come home, it’s easy to just dump your stuff wherever it happens to land but it can cause a lot of frustration later when you’re looking for your car keys yet again or trying to find that bill so you can pay it. Get yourself organised by creating a place for everything and training yourself to put stuff away properly! Buy a folder or a letter holder and place your bills or mail in that every day. Once bills are paid, file them away in a special folder so you know it’s done. Hang some hooks near your front door to hold all your keys. Get your kids to always put their toys away in their own special toy box. It may be a cliché but a place for everything and everything in its place is what you need to follow in order to get and stay organised.
Secret Three: Clean As You Go
It may seem a little weird but cleaning and organisation go hand in hand. If you keep your house clean day in and day out instead of just doing a big clean once a week, you’ll naturally want to stay more organised. After all, why spend all that time cleaning if you’re just going to clutter up the floors and benchtops again?
Secret Four: Stay Disciplined!
It’s all well and good to go on an organising spree and get your house spick and span but if you’re anything like me, all your hard work goes down the drain after a few weeks as you slowly slip back into your bad habits. Avoid this by recognising the issue and staying disciplined. Remind yourself every day to put things away and to throw away things if you need to. It’ll seem like work for a while but after a few weeks it’ll become a new habit and you’ll find yourself wanting to stay organised so you don’t slip back into your messy ways.
