Are you thinking of installing a new fence but are not sure what material to use? Why not consider PVC fencing? It has benefits that are not found in other fencing materials and it will last a lifetime. Read on to learn more.
PVC fences are made from a combination of vinyl resin and various additives. Some of the additives commonly used in vinyl include:
• stabilisers – these improve heat stability, minimising the degradation of vinyl during exposure to high temperatures
• impact modifiers – these improve impact strength, making it more resistant to cracking or breaking
• pigments – provide consistent colour and may screen or absorb UV radiation
• UV inhibitors – protect the finished product from the sun and titanium dioxide is the most common material used
PVC fences have advantages over many other types of fencing materials. PVC fences will not rot, rust, splinter, discolour, or warp, and it will never need painting. They are resistant to graffiti, will not harbour termites, are free of funguses, and also free of harmful chemicals. They are virtually maintenance free. PVC fences do cost more to buy initially, but because no maintenance is required, the extra cost is negated compared to the ongoing maintenance that other fencing materials require.
PVC fencing has a higher tensile strength than timber and 4 times the flexibility. Because the fencing is a smooth surface with no nails, sharp edges or splinters, it is safer than many other types of fences. During installation of the fence, it is important that the expansion and contraction of the vinyl is considered. Any PVC product can be affected by contact with lawn mowers and other garden equipment so you should use caution when operating these pieces of equipment near fence posts.
PVC fencing often comes with a 50 year warranty. The PVC used in the fences is safe, non toxic, and will not support combustion in the event of a fire. They do not break down and can be recycled at the end of their effective life.
Because the main UV inhibitor in PVC fences is titanium dioxide, which is white in colour, it is difficult to offer dark coloured fences that will retain their durability over time. That is why most PVC fences are offered in lighter colours. PVC fences can be painted with a variety of paints but most companies warn against doing so as it will void the warranty.
