Bathrooms - Open Air

Australians have a love affair with the outdoors, with many people choosing to combine their indoor and outdoor living areas so that the backyard can be enjoyed all year round.  But why limit it to just the living areas?  It is possible to design your bathroom to take advantage of the outdoors as well, while still having privacy.

Open Air Bathrooms and Privacy

Privacy is understandably the number one concern when it comes to open air bathrooms as no-one wants their neighbours to take a peek when in the middle of bathing.  If you have a private backyard with plenty of screening, why not consider removing a traditional wall and replacing it with glass?  The glass can be fixed or it can be designed as a tilt door.

Many backyards don’t have the privacy or seclusion to be able to take advantage of a full glass wall and if yours is one of them, don’t fret.  There are other ways that you can create an open air feeling in your backyard.  Why not consider using a sliding wall or a parapet wall?  A parapet wall allows you to screen yourself up to shoulder height – giving you that necessary modesty while still allowing you to look onto your garden.

Using Windows for that Feeling of an Open Air Bathroom

If you need to maintain as much privacy as possible, then consider using strategically placed windows.  A small window placed at head height in the shower or beside the bath will reveal very little of the inside of the bathroom but it will still allow you to look onto your garden.

So whether you have a private backyard that allows for a true open air experience or a busy inner-city home that isn’t all that private, there is a way to make your bathroom as open air as possible.  Why just stare at the walls when there’s an entire vista outside that you can use?
