Have you decided to replace your floor coverings but are after something more natural than the standard carpets and rugs? Well, there is a variety of natural floor coverings that look great, are durable, and extremely environmentally friendly. Natural floor coverings, as the name would suggest, are floor coverings that are made from natural materials such as plant or animal fibres.
Sisal carpets are made from the Agave plants which are grown in regions of Africa. Sisal fibres are long, durable, and smooth, and it can be spun into a fine yarn that can then be woven into a carpet or rug. It is the toughest of all natural floor coverings and it is one of the only natural carpets that can be dyed – giving you a wide range of colours to choose from. Sisal can also be woven into a variety of patterns.
Seagrass carpets are strong and impermeable to water. Because of this, it is nearly impossible to dye so it is available in its natural colour, which is various shades of greens. Seagrass can be woven into different styles, however, depending on your preferences. Most seagrass carpets come with natural latex backing to ensure that it is as durable as possible, and to prevent the adhesive from the laying process from showing the carpet.
Coir carpets and rugs are made by spinning the processed fibres of the outer husks of the coconut. Colour-wise it comes in its natural colour, in a bleached colour, or as a combination of the two. It is a very simple product and commonly weaved into a herringbone or ribbed pattern.
Paper may sound fragile but it is actually a lot stronger than it looks. Paper floor coverings are made from twisting together strips of paper that have been coated in resin in order to create a texture that is similar to that of yarn.
Mountain grass has a rigid texture and is very thick, so that it has the appearance of wood – a great substitute for many areas of the home. The fibres for this floor covering are obtained from the high altitudes areas of the Pacific.
Jute is obtained from plants that resemble hemp and flax, and it is renowned for its durability. Thus jute floor coverings can stand up to a decent amount of wear. The colour ranges from tans to browns and the colour differences are noticeable in the rugs.
