Mailboxes

A mailbox is an essential item in any home for receiving mail but you don’t have to be stuck with something boring or utilitarian.  The huge range available means that you can find the perfect mailbox to suit your home.  Read on for more.

Types of Mailboxes

Post mount mailboxes are typically installed at the kerb out the front of the home.  These mailboxes require a post and mounting board to be installed.  Wall mount mailboxes are generally installed near the front door of the home.  They may require mounting screws and anchors to be installed.  You can also buy mailboxes that can be incorporated into brick, concrete or masonry.

Selecting the Right Mailbox

When selecting your mailbox you have a choice of a wide variety of styles.  You should select one that reflects the style of your home, whether that be modern or traditional.  Generally speaking, mailboxes are classified as being either traditional or contemporary.  Mailboxes are available in a range of colours and finishes, including flat, semi-gloss, high gloss, and textured.  Also take into account the size of the box.  Sizes range from standard, to large, and extra large.  Ensure that you pick a box that will be large enough to receive your expected volume of mail.  In many areas, mail security is a large concern so ensure that your mailbox is able to be locked.

Mailbox Materials

Mailboxes may be made from the following materials:

• Galvanised steel – these are heavy duty and rust-resistant and come in a range of gauges from standard to heavy.
• Aluminium – these will not rust, making them perfect for coastal areas.
• Plastic – these mailboxes range from standard thickness to virtually indestructible double-wall construction.  They are rust proof.
• Brass – mailboxes look very elegant and will last for years if cared for properly.
• Wood – these are great for providing a range of looks but they will need to be regularly painted or sealed.

Mailbox Accessories

Mailbox accessories are also available.  Such accessories include holders for newspapers, magazines, or catalogues, and metal signs or place that display your house number.
