Roller blinds are both elegant and practical but like any other blinds, they do get dirty over time. If you’ve wondered how exactly to clean roller blinds, we’ve put together this guide for you. For anything else you need to know, check with your local
blinds store or supplier.
Check the Material
The first thing that you will need to do is to check what material your
roller blind is actually made out of. This is important as it will determine if the blind needs to be spot cleaned or if it can be washed. If you are not sure what the material is, check with your local blinds supplier.
Washing Roller Blinds
If the fabric of your roller blinds can be washed, cleaning the blinds is quite simple. You can start by giving them a vacuum to remove any surface dust and dirt. Once this is done, remove the blind from the roller itself and lay it flat on the floor. Use the brush attachment on the vacuum to vacuum the blind. You can then lower the blind into a bathtub that has been half filled with warm water and a gentle laundry detergent. Lay the blind in the tub and allow it to soak for a while to loosen any ingrained dirt. You can then wipe over it with a soft sponge or cloth to remove any remaining dirt. Stains can be removed by scrubbing them with a toothbrush. Rinse the blind in clean water (empty the bathtub of soapy water and refill it with clean water). Until no more soap comes out of the blind. Lay the blind flat on a clothes horse or outside on the clothesline and allow to dry. Reattach the blind to the roller and rehang it.
Spot Cleaning Roller Blinds
If your roller blinds will not stand up to being washed, you’ll need to spot clean them. This is where you only clean the bits that are visibly dirty. You can start by vacuuming your blinds as outlined above to remove most of the surface dust and dirt. Next, mix up a solution of laundry detergent and warm water to use as the cleaning agent. Remember to test it on an inconspicuous spot to make sure that it doesn’t cause the colour to run or damage the blinds. Use a sponge or a toothbrush to clean any of the dirty spots. You can even do the whole blind if you like, a little bit at a time. Just be careful not to over wet it. Rinse with clean water.
