Average Number of Windows in Each Home

A helpful starting point when you look into how many windows you’ll need for your home is the average number of windows per room.  Depending on the size of the room, you’ll find that they have one or two windows.  That is, bedrooms and the like are more likely to have just one window, while living areas or open plan areas will have two or more.  An interesting fact is that the average home will have between ten to twelve windows in total.

How Big Is The Room?

Another factor to consider when calculating how many windows you need is the actual size of the rooms in your home.  Larger rooms will naturally need more windows to let in enough natural light and to stop you from feeling like you’re living inside a box.  Don’t forget to take the size of the windows themselves into consideration.  If you’re only installing one window but it’s a large window, chances are, it’s more than enough!  If you are installing small windows, you’ll need to install a bank of them of in order to get enough light.

Take Energy Efficiency into Account

When you are calculating the number of windows you need for your home, don’t forget to take into account the energy efficiency of your home.  In the standard home, most of the heat loss and gain is through the windows therefore you want to strike the right balance between enough light and view and not too much heat or cold coming in.  If you have your heart set on more windows rather than less, double glazed windows and good window coverings will go a long way to improving the energy efficiency of your windows and your home in general.
