What are Pendant Lamps?

A pendant lamp is another common term for pendant lights.  Pendant lights are lights that have the bulb and the shade at the end of a long cord, so that they dangle down.  You can adjust the length of the cord so that the light sits the perfect distance off a surface.  Pendant lights are great for ambient lighting but they excel at task lighting as they throw off light downwards with little shadow.  You can use a pendant light singly but they work very well when grouped together (odd number groupings tend to work better aesthetically than even number groupings).

In some cases, you’ll find that they are made of a combination of materials.

Choosing Pendant Lamps

If you think that you’d like to use pendant lights in your home, it can be tough to narrow down your choices from the huge range available.  The first thing that you can consider is how much of a feature you want them to be.  Do you want the pendants to be a subtle complement to your home’s decor or do you want them to be a dominant feature?  For example, a grouping of smallish pendant lights looks great over a kitchen bench, while a large, oversized pendant is perfect for a living area.  You’ll of course want a pendant light or pendant lights that fit in with your room.  Look for other distinguishing features in the room and use these as a guide. This could be a colour or material you’ve used, or a common shape. For example, if your room has a lot of rounded lines, a round, oval or cylindrical pendant lamp could fit in amazingly well. A stark, structured room, suits minimalistic square or abstract designs.  Finally, make sure you keep your budget in mind.  How much are you prepared to spend on your new lights?  Take into account both the amount of lights you have the buy and the cost of professional installation.
