Guide to Buying Induction Cookware

Sep 3, 2012 by

Topic: Cookware

Gordon Ramsay has one. So too does Jamie Oliver. No, it’s not a controversial or cheesy catchphrase – it’s a range of induction cookware.

What is Induction Cooking?

As the name suggests, induction cookware is for use on an induction stove. Quite simply, rather than transferring heat to the pot or pan, induction cookware allows the vessel to generate the heat itself. It does this through a process of electromagnetism, which is said to cook food faster, and fresher. And since the cooktop never gets hot, induction cooking is arguably safer than other varieties.

Given these benefits and the rising popularity of induction cookware, many brands now offer extensive induction ranges.

While you can buy nifty devices that allow you to use non-induction cookware on an induction stove, it’s likely to be easier to stock your cupboards with some induction items.

Choosing Induction Cookware

The first step when buying induction cookware is to ensure the items match the size of the stove elements. If the pots and pans are too small, the element won’t recognise them. Likewise, if the cookware is too big for the element, it won’t heat up properly.

Shop around for your cookware, but don’t always go for the cheapest brand. Look for reliable brands, ask for recommendations from friends or experts and compare the cookware quality.

If you’re unsure if a cookware set is the ideal metal, place a magnet on it. If the magnet sticks firmly, the cookware is likely to be made from a quality metal.

How Much Does Induction Cookware Cost?

Like everything, prices vary between brands and depending on quality. You’re likely to be looking at between $250 and $800 for a basic cookware range. Again, shop around and wait for the sales if you are budget-conscious.
