Topic: Awnings
Fixed awnings or overhangs are secondary coverings that extend from the roof or side of your home to the outdoors. Usually installed for weather protection, they are constructed from materials such as galvanized steel, acrylic, canvas and aluminum. Awnings are usually installed above windows, patios, porches, at the building entrance and over any open area you need to shade (for options see awnings product brochures).
Fixed awnings extend living space to the outdoors by shading patios, porches and decks. An awning is an easy and inexpensive way of adding an exterior room to your home without the mess and down-time associated with a construction project.
Fixed awnings protect your curtains and indoor furniture against fading due to direct sunlight exposure. They also keep outdoor surfaces like walkways and garden paths dry in rainy and winter seasons. When used over a garden, awnings allow you to enjoy the outdoors longer. If you live in an area that receives plenty of sunlight, ask your awning supplier for canvas material with UV protection to keep harmful rays away.
Fixed awnings have long been used to decorate homes and continue to carry timeless and elegant appeal. While the traditional design of awnings is the sloping canopy style, awnings can now be designed in many ways to complement most decorating styles.
The material of your awnings determines how much care is needed to maintain them. Canvas is widely used because it is inexpensive and comes in a variety of designs to beautify the outdoors. Canvas materials need only to be cleaned at least once a year using soap and water and occasional dusting to get rid of dirt. Fabrics that are water repellant, fade resistant and rot resistant also minimise replacement. On the other hand, metal awnings made of galvanized steel are durable, rustproof and require very little or no maintenance.
Awnings block the sun’s heat and lower the temperature inside your home. When added above a window or glass door, awnings keep away the sun’s rays, reduce solar gain and increase air-conditioning efficiency. Awnings also keep the temperature of a room down in summer. Areas that are shaded by fixed awnings usually have lower temperatures than non-shaded areas which helps reduce your energy consumption for cooling.
