Downlighters

Downlighters are some of the most popular lights in use in the home today due to their simple styling and ability to be used everywhere.  Read on to learn more.

What are Downlighters?

Downlighters are recessed into the ceiling with the housing (the lamp socket, wiring, and enclosure) being located above the ceiling and the trim (the part of the light that you see) finishing off the installation.  They have become very popular in the home and several sizes and styles are available.  As well as general lighting, you can also use downlighters for creating focus within a room, such as highlighting artwork or other features.  Downlighters can be used in all areas of the home – the kitchen, lounge and dining rooms, hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms, and outdoor areas.

Types of Downlighters

While there are a number of downlights on the market, halogen downlights are some of the most popular.  These are low voltage lights and as such require a transformer to rum them.  Low voltage light bulbs are different to standard light bulbs as they create a crisp, white light.  The halogen globes also last much longer than a standard globe and they are very power efficient.

240 volt downlights are still popular as they are cheap and offer a decent amount of light.  These lights are recessed into the ceiling like all downlights and usually have a standard GLS light bulb installed.  These lights are typically used in more utilitarian areas such as the toilet, pantry, laundry, etc.  240 volt GU-10 downlights are downlights that have a type of light bulb that offers an alternative to low voltage downlight globes.  They work the same way as low voltage downlights do but they have a yellower light, and they do not last as long as low voltage bulbs.

Getting the Most from your Downlighters

To get the maximum effect from your downlights, they should be placed 1.5 to 2 metres apart, depending on what you plan to use the lights for, and how high your ceiling is.  Generally speaking, the higher the ceiling, the more downlights you will need.  Downlights are dimmable, allowing you to control the amount of light that they produce.  For everyday lighting, the lights are generally 50 watts but they are also available in 35, 20, and 10 watt bulbs.  The lower wattage bulbs are used for effect lighting.
