Topic: Double Hung Windows
Double hung sash windows are a great addition to any home, as they are attractive, elegant, and provide good ventilation. Here's what you need to know.
To understand what a double hung sash window is, you first need to understand what a sash is. A sash can be defined as the operable or movable part of the window, with the sash itself being comprised of the framework that holds the window panes. Therefore, a double hung sash window is a window that has two sashes that move up and down in the window frame. You can think of it as a vertical sliding window. In contrast, a single hung window also has two sashes but only one of these is movable. In modern double hung sash windows, spring balances are used but traditional double hung windows used a system of counterweights operated by a pulley.
One of the main features of a double hung window is the amount of control that you have over ventilation to your home. Each sash can be slid past the other, so you can opt to have one sash at a time fully or partially open or both sashes open together. This allows you to control how much air enters the home, and you can have it so that cool air enters the home and warmer air leaves, creating better air circulation.
Another great feature you might find handy is the option to have some double hung window come with tilting sashes. These sashes tilt or can be detached to allow for easy cleaning of the windows. This is great if you like clean windows but find it a hassle to do it in the traditional way.
Of course, you have the option of standard features such as different types of glass (e.g. double glazing, safety glass, etc), externally fitted flyscreens, a range of locking options, decorative glazing bars, colour matched hardware, and the ability to group the windows together to how you want. Double hung windows are commonly timber or aluminium.
