Doors and Door Frames

Doors and the frames that they are hung in are an essential part of any home. But what is out there for you? Read on to learn more.

What to Consider for your Door

There are several things that you will need to consider when selecting a door for your home. Consider its appearance – do you want a statement door for your entrance or will you want to use the same style of door all through your home? Consider how strong the door is, especially if you're looking at security screen doors. Is the door to be used for ventilation? Doors are an easy way to control the climate in your home so consider the insulation and energy efficiency of the door that you select. Finally, consider what soundproofing, privacy and lighting you need from your door.

Types of Doors

The most common types of doors are:

  • wooden
  • aluminium
  • flush
  • stile and rail
  • hinged
  • bi fold
  • sliding
  • stacker
  • louvre
  • pocket
  • French

The type of door that you choose will determine its framing system.

Door Frames

A door frame is a complete assembly that provides the structure on which the door can swing. The two sides and the top are referred to as jambs. The frame is manufactured and the door can be pre-hung in the frame for ease of installation. Doors can come with frames that are made from a variety of materials. The most common materials are:

  • aluminium
  • vinyl
  • wood

Trends in Doors

Bi fold doors are becoming ever more popular, and they are two doors hinged together that fold into one another. They are mounted on a track that hangs from the top of the opening. The opening can hold one door or two doors that meet in the middle. Bi fold doors can be solid, louvred or a combination of both. They are perfect for areas that you wish to feel open, such as living areas. One of their best uses is for linking indoor and outdoor entertaining areas.

Pocket doors are also very popular. These are doors that slide from the opening and into the wall. The popularity of these doors lies in the fact that an opening can be fully accessible without requiring the sacrifice of any space. However, be aware that it can be unrealistic to replace existing doors with pocket doors as you will need a non-load bearing wall that is wide enough to accommodate the door next to the opening. The existing framing within the wall will also need to be torn out and replaced with framing to hold the door.

In front doors, some popular trends include clean lines, horizontal or cubed glass apertures, or a minimalist looks with stainless steel pull handles. This is a very modern look and the huge range of glass inserts means that you can customise your door to look exactly how you want.

Doors that pair timber with metal inserts are also becoming popular. This is a European look that uses Australian wood such as sassafras, blackwood and Tasmanian oak. These doors have an extremely cutting-edge contemporary look.
