Feng Shui - Home Design

Have you ever walked into a house and felt happy in it, or conversely, felt uncomfortable in a house for no particular reason?  This is you feeling the house’s Feng Shui.  By using Feng Shui in our house designs, we can create a house that maximises its positive energies, making it a great place to live.

Feng Shui and the Energy Within the Home

Just as the human body has energy within it, so too does the family home.  This energy is called Qi energy, Qi meaning life force, and while it cannot be seen, it does affect the lives of the people living in the home.  If a house has positive Qi, the potential for happiness, better health, relationships and finances will improve.  If there is negative Qi, there may be problems within the abovementioned areas.  While there will always be both positive and negative Qi within a home as one cannot exist without the other, Feng Shui aims to maximise the positive while minimising the negative.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is one of the branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and it is the branch that focuses on the environment that we live in.  There are three main schools of Feng Shui and these are:

Form School: this school involves the analysis of forms, which are physical objects in or around the building and the site the building sits on.   All forms have their own Qi and this contributes to the overall Qi of the site.

Compass School: this school involves determining the compass direction that a building faces and then dividing the entire site into nine different sectors that relate to the eight directions of the compass.  Each sector relates to a different aspect of your life and the Qi within the different sectors influence the respective aspects of your life.

Flying Star School: is considered to be the most sacred and comprehensive school of Feng Shui.  It calculates the natal chart of the building and this then identifies more specific Qi within each of the nine sectors.  It also accounts for the age of the building, which other schools do not do.

There are actually many different schools of Feng Shui but the majority would fall into one of the above three main schools.

Feng Shui and Design in the Home

When designing the layout of your home using Feng Shui, the objective is to create a comfortable home that supports your family in every aspect of their life.  The main things to consider when planning the layout of your home are:

  • that the main entrance is in a sector that brings good energy into the home
  • placing the bedrooms so that they are in sectors that promote positive energies during sleep or Yin activities (Yin being quiet)
  • placing the more active rooms such as the lounge, dining and study in sectors that promote positive energies during Yang activities (Yang being active)
  • that the wet areas are placed in areas where the energy is more inauspicious, or not as positive
  • careful placement of windows and doors so that the furniture can be arranged to maximum positive effect

This may be more difficult than it sounds as each building usually only has two or three usable sectors that are good for Yin activities and two to three sectors that are good for Yang activities.  By engaging a professional, you will be able to find out exactly what energies you have and where they are located within the home, therefore ensuring that you will maximize all the positive areas within the home.

Using a Feng Shui Consultant in your Home Design

When building or renovating, it is ideal to use a Feng Shui consultant as early in the process as possible, preferably straight after what you have decided that you want and before the plans have been drawn up.  By using the consultant before the plans are drawn, you can help to ensure the best placement of the rooms within the house.  If the architect has already drawn the plans, you can still use the help of a Feng Shui consultant.  They can help you improve on the plans if practicable, or if the plans cannot be altered for various reasons, they can make suggestions on how to maximise the positive energy within a home.
