When decorating a room, it can sometimes feel like the finished product is somehow incomplete, like there’s a missing element. In many cases, a rug is that element that you need to bring the whole room together and make it really pop! Rugs are perfect for any room but different rugs suit different spaces, which is why we thought we’d put together this guide for decorating with rugs. Feature or Backdrop?
While rugs are beautiful no matter which way you use them, you’ll need to decide if you want your rug to be a feature or a backdrop. If you opt for a feature, look for a striking rug with interesting patterns and colour combinations, so that the eye is immediately drawn towards it. However, if you prefer the rug to fade into the background a little more, you’ll want a beautifully tactile rug that harmonises well with the furniture and other decorating elements in the room.
Get the Proportions Right
When using a rug as a decorative element in a room, it’s important to make sure that you get the proportions right. It’ll just look silly if the rug is too large or too small! As well, you’ll need to make sure that it is the right size for the furniture that will be sitting near or on it. For example, if you are using a rug in the dining room, it needs to be large enough to accommodate the chairs when they are pulled out as well as tucked in! To get the proportions right, try drawing a rough plan of the room to give you an idea of the size or measure the space itself first.
Be Smart with Colour
Yet something else to think about when decorating with rugs is what colours to choose, seeing as rugs are available in just about any colour and colour combination that you can think of! One issue is practicality – if you have kids or pets, you want a rug that won’t show up every speck of dirt and piece of fur! White and neutral colour rugs are perfect for most rooms as they’ll blend in well while lifting the room at the same time. Bright colours and patterns are great if you want to add pop to a room, but if you’d rather a feeling of cosiness and drama then darker tones are the better choice.
Use Them as a Wall Hanging
If you’re after a different way to use a rug for decoration, an excellent idea is to use them as a wall hanging. They look fantastic when used on large walls and can really bring that something special to a room. If you do choose to use them this way, make sure you look for rugs that have interesting patterns or textures so that you have a true focal piece.
