When building a deck, most people think that timber is the only option available to them. However, there is a huge range of materials available, including ones that you may not have thought of before. Find out more below.
Hardwoods are the most durable of all the timber decking materials, but they generally cost more than other types of timbers. As a general rule, hardwood will last longer than other timbers, and some are even naturally termite resistant. Common hardwoods include cedar, redwood, jarrah, and ironbark. Timber requires maintenance every year.
Softwoods are a popular option for timber decking as it is economical and can be stained to a variety of colours, thanks to its naturally light colour. The most popular softwood is treated pine. Be aware that softwoods require regular deck maintenance in order to avoid splitting, cracking, splintering, or warping.
Wooden tiles are decking tiles that give you the look of a deck. They are laid over an existing flat surface such as a concrete slab. The wooden tiles are generally square in shape and are held together with plastic fasteners, eliminating the need for glue or nails. This gives you the advantage of being able to install them yourself and also to move them down the track, if necessary.
Composites are made by combining plastic and waste wood fibres and have an embossed grain to give them a wood look. Composite boards may be made from wood and polyethylene or wood and polypropylene. Composite boards will not splinter and do not need staining or painting. Because composites are not as stiff as wood, they move more in response to weather changes. However, they do need to be scrubbed regularly to avoid mildew.
Plastic decks are splinter free and require practically no maintenance, apart from cleaning occasionally. However, it may not feel, sound or look exactly like wood. Plastic decks have complicated fastening systems to allow the pieces to move as the temperature changes, but this can cause them to squeak as you walk on them. PVC decks use tongue and groove features to allow for easy installation and to hide the screws. PVC can be fitted with wood grain, to allow for extra traction.
These are interlocking metal boards that work especially well with modern architecture. Aluminium decking is attractive and easy to clean. However, be aware that it attracts dirt, is expensive, and may dent if not treated properly.
