Alicia Draper, Marketing Coordinator for Blum, explains how you can achieve perfect motion and organisation with a custom-designed kitchen.
More About Blum AustraliaStorage space is paramount in any kitchen, but how do you best get more? Wall mounted cabinets that reach right to the ceiling may be the perfect answer. Read on to learn more.
Cabinets that now reach to the ceiling are becoming more and more popular both with people renovating kitchens and building new kitchens. This is because the “empty” space on top of the cabinet is eliminated, solving the problem of dust accumulating. Ceiling height cabinets also look more stylish and you gain a surprising amount of extra space, which is perfect for those necessary but lesser used items. These items can include linen, Christmas decoration, photographs, formal occasion crockery and silverware, and so forth. Ceiling height cabinets can also make small spaces seem larger but be careful with their usage or you may end up actually overwhelming the space, even in larger kitchens.

If you opt for ceiling height cabinets in your kitchen, there are some things that you need to consider, most importantly access. Think about installing doors that lift up, as these are safer than the traditional doors that open outwards when you are on a stepladder. If you are shorter in height, you may prefer to install extra storage lower in the kitchen. If you are older, ceiling height cabinets may not be the best option if you have any safety concerns (such as falling from the ladder). If you decide that true ceiling height cabinets are not for you, you can install a bulkhead, which will give you the same look. This bulkhead sits on top of the cabinet and extends to the ceiling, hiding the empty space.
