Carport Design

Carports are a great place to store a car if you don’t want to install a full garage or do not have the room for a garage.  Carports are also economical ways to protect your car from the various elements of the weather.  As well as being a place to park the car, they can also be used for extra storage or even as an impromptu entertaining area if you are having a large gathering.  Because there are so many styles of carports on the market, it is important to ensure that you are getting the right one for your needs.  It should also match the style of your home and you have many choices, from a simple do it yourself carport to intricate gable roof designs.

Designing the Correct Carport for your Home

Carports can be attached to the side of your home or freestanding depending on the space that you have available, and what is most convenient for you.  Freestanding carports have the advantage of being able to be located anywhere on your property.  Also, many freestanding carports are “do it yourself”, which are a great budget option as you don’t need to hire anyone to install them.

Carports that are attached to the home may be attached via the fascia or via a truss bracket system, the latter being one of the more popular methods.  This is because the truss bracket system is engineered to meet any wind load in Australia and it does not interfere at all with the existing guttering or down pipes on the home.

A carport professional will design the carport to match the existing style of your home to ensure that it does not look out of place and that the theme is continued throughout all aspects of the home.  The carport thus may have a simple skillion roof or it may have elaborate gables.  The professionals are even able to match your existing roof pitch for a truly seamless look.  As far as roofing materials go, options include Colorbond, Zincalume, or polycarbonate, amongst others.  There is definitely no limitation on the type of roofing that is used, as long as it matches with the rest of the home.

Carports may be built from timber or steel, depending on your preference; however, timber is slightly cheaper.  The only potential issue with timber is that it may expand and contract with the differing seasons, and thus may require more maintenance.  For a truly no-maintenance solution, a steel carport may be your best option.
