Cleaning Timber Outdoor Furniture
One of the most important things that you have to do in caring for your timber outdoor furniture is to keep it clean. Cleaning is relatively easy but it is a bit time consuming. Remove old oil and dirt by using a stiff brush. Wash the timber as well with a solution of 5 tablespoons dishwashing liquid and a tablespoon of bleach in a large bucket of water. Allow it to dry completely before oiling your timber, if it needs it.
Keep the Timber Oiled
If you don’t protect the surface of the timber, it will naturally turn a silvery grey colour as it ages. Some people desire this look but if you don’t, you’ll need to oil your timber regularly to keep the tones alive and vibrant. Use a good quality oil to refinish your timber three to four times a year, depending on how much sun exposure it gets. Try and find and oil that has water, fungi, and mould resistant properties.
Tighten the Joints
Over time, the joints can loosen in timber outdoor furniture. It is recommended to, when cleaning, check over the joints for signs of looseness or instability. If you notice any, simply re-tension the bolts. Be aware that not doing this can actually cause damage to your furniture over time, causing its life to be prematurely shortened.
Restoring the Timber Furniture
If your timber outdoor furniture has already gone that silvery grey colour, you can restore back to its showroom beauty. All you need to do is gently sand the furniture until the original colour of the timber is revealed. Once you’ve done that, you can just coat it with an outdoor furniture oil of your choice.
