What is Meant by Painting My Decking?

By “painting my decking” we mean that you can use a decking paint in order to protect your deck rather than one of the other decking protection materials such as decking stains or oils.  Decking paint is especially formulated for use outdoors on decks and it will stand up to the foot traffic and the weather conditions that the deck endures.  Not only does it look good, it will ensure that your deck remains in tip top condition.  Painting your deck also allows you to change the colour of your deck every time you update your garden theme or design!

How to Paint My Decking

If you want to paint your decking, the first step that you need to take is to choose your decking paint.  Make sure that you choose one that is especially formulated for use on outdoor decks and read the instructions to see if a primer or undercoat needs to be used with it.  Select the paint colour of your choice.

Once you have your paint, you’ll need to ensure that your deck is completely clean and dry.  In the case of new decks, you’ll need to let them “cure” for at least a week to ensure that they are dried out properly.  If you need to clean your deck, make sure any old coating is completely removed and use a decking cleaner to get the deck pristine.  When the deck is correctly prepared, apply the primer or undercoat if necessary using a brush, roller, or paint broom.  You can use a sprayer if you like but you must be careful to get even and thorough coverage.

Once the primer or undercoat is dry, you can begin to apply the decking paint.  Just like your primer or undercoat, you can apply the paint using a brush, roller, paint broom or sprayer.  Take your time applying the paint and ensure that the coverage is smooth and even.  Leave the first coat to dry according to the manufacturer’s instruction and then apply the second and third coat as necessary.  Leave the paint to dry for the recommended time before walking on it or placing your deck furniture.

It should be noted that you should never try painting your deck in adverse weather conditions (if it looks like rain, is raining or the winds are high).  Wait for a couple of days of good, clear weather.  Also make sure to protect your plants and other areas around the deck with drop cloths if necessary.

How Often Do I Need to Paint My Deck?

If you have chosen to paint your deck, it is important to realise that, just like any other deck coating, it is not just a case of painting the deck once and then leaving it.  Decks need to be completely stripped back and re-coated every few years.  This is because the paint wears down over time causing it to be less effective at protecting the deck.  re-painting your deck will ensure that your deck remains fully protected and it will also rejuvenate it, bringing it back to a brand new appearance.
