Ensure that the fan won't let warm air out, or cold air or odours to re-enter the bathroom.

You also have some options when it comes to style.  Nowadays there is much more than just the round plastic grill available.  You have a range of shapes and colours to choose from – round, square, covered by a grill or exposed, and finishes including white, chrome or brass.  Some exhaust fans look like light fittings, and can include lights and heaters.  These combination exhaust fans are perfect for the smaller bathroom where you don't have as much room to play with, but be careful when choosing these as they cannot be fitted above the shower.

New Technologies in Bathroom Exhaust Fans

Bathroom exhaust fans are becoming more sophisticated as well, with automation being included.  One example is bathroom fans that sense the amount of humidity in the air and turn on when they are required.  You can also find fans that are programmable – you can program them to remain on for as long as it takes the steam to clear, and they will turn themselves off.  For the ultimate in automated exhaust fans, there is now a motion sensor technology that senses when someone enters the bathroom and turns the fan on.
