If you have stairs in your home, you want to be able to use them safely and reduce the risk of slips or falls. There are some great products available that greatly improve the anti slip properties of your stairs, either inside or outside the home. Here’s what you need to know.
About Anti Slip Stairs
Stairs without adequate anti slip measures installed can prove to be a hazard, as there is the risk of people slipping and falling, either by slipping off the edge of the stair or by misjudging the stairs. The best way to improve the safety of your staircase is to apply anti slip products that clearly define the edge of the stair and also contrast with the colour of the stairs, so that people can see exactly how far apart each stair is, reducing the likelihood of the stairs being misjudged. Anti slip stair products should be installed on all stairs in the home, whether they are interior or exterior stairs.
Types of Anti Slip Stair Products
Here are some common products that help to improve the slip resistance of your stairs:
- Stair nosing -- these are strips that are applied to the edge of the stair in order to make the stair safer. They are permanently attached to the stair and provide greater traction, even in the presence of water or oil. Stair nosings can be installed on many different types of stairs such as tile, concrete, timber, carpet, or stone. Generally speaking, the more area of the stair that the nosing covers, the safer the stair will be. Stair nosings are made from materials such as anodised aluminium or acrylic, and can incorporate inserts made from PVC or other materials such as photo luminescent strips that allow you to better judge the depth of the stair, especially at night or during power failures. Different colours are available.
- Anti slip tape -- anti slip tape can be easily installed on any stair surface and it is available in different colours and sizes. Different textures are also available. The adhesive used to stick the tape to the stair surface is water resistant and very durable, so that the tape will not lift over time and present a hazard in itself. The tape can be installed on interior or exterior stairs.
