Accent Lighting in the Bathroom

If your bathroom looks a little boring and one dimensional, the problem could be as simple as having the wrong type of lighting.  Luckily, the problem is easy to fix as you just have to install some accent lighting to offset your general illumination and create much needed visual interest.  Here’s what you need to know about accent lighting in your bathroom.  For more advice or examples of accent lighting, visit your local lighting supplier.

What is Accent Lighting?

Accent lighting, simply put, is any type of lighting that is able to highlight or accent something in the bathroom.  It could be placed around the mirror to give you better light to groom yourself by, a spotlight on the shower, or a light that shines on your favourite piece of art or sculpture.  Accent lighting is very useful and allows you to perform bathroom tasks better but it really excels at creating visual interest in the bathroom. That is, it helps to create moods and separate areas within what is often a one dimensional room.

Ways of Using Accent Lighting in the Bathroom

There are several great ideas for using accent lights in the bathroom and it really is up to your imagination what you choose to go for.  One excellent idea is to place LED lights actually around your cabinetry and your bathroom mirror.  These lights will allow you to apply makeup, brush your teeth, and shave and so on in an accurate light that will not age you or cast shadows.

Many people think that the bathroom is just a utility room and so don’t bother installing artworks, ornaments or favourite sculptures.  This is really a shame as these things can help turn the bathroom into a sophisticated room where you want to spend a lot of time!  Add artwork and sculptures and show them off with small spotlights that shine down or up onto them depending on how you want them to be lit up. Smaller pieces only need one light while larger artworks benefit from having two or more spotlights or downlights to highlight them evenly.

The shower is becoming a huge feature in many bathrooms with people installing frameless shower screens, rain shower heads, massage jets and more.  Highlight the beauty of your shower by installing recessed spotlights that shine into the spray of water, glint off the glass or even just show off the shine of your tiles!

Of course, you can’t forget about the humble bathtub.  If you have a tub in your bathroom, why not show it off and really ramp up its style by installing LED uplights around the edge of it, or recessed lights mounted in the wall to the side of it.  You can dim them while you’re in the tub and you’ll really feel like you’re soaking in your own personal paradise.

Add Dimmers

If you are installing various types of accent lighting in your bathroom, it is an excellent idea to add dimmers at the same time.  Dimmers control the brightness of the light, allowing you to have it up high when needed, or to have it down low.  In this way, you get more creativity from your lights as you’re able to control the ambience.  With the simple addition of dimmer switches, you can turn your bathroom from a utility room into a pleasant and relaxing retreat.
