Wood Colouring Choices

So you want to use wood in your home but you are not quite sure whether to go for dark wood or light wood?  There are some tips that you can use to help make your decision and give you a home décor that looks stunning.

Choosing Light Wood

Natural and lighter colour woods look great in rooms that you want to look more open and spacious.  They work especially well in casual, beachy, country, and contemporary decors.  Light wood is fast becoming one of the most popular trends within timber as it is so versatile and it can complement so many other colours.

Choosing Dark Wood

Darker woods are best used in rooms that have a more formal or traditional feel.  Be aware that dark woods can make a room feel smaller and they can show wear faster, but used correctly, they can have a dramatic impact.  In formal areas, dark wood can create a wonderful cosy feeling.  Modern settings benefit greatly from dark wood as it helps to create contrast and bring warmth to what would otherwise be a stark, minimalistic feel.  Think of how well wood, stainless steel and glass work together.

Things to Keep in Mind when Choosing a Wood Colour

When it comes to choosing a wood colour, it is important to keep in mind your existing furniture and décor.  The goal is to try and complement what you already have, unless you are starting from scratch, in which case a new floor can form the basis of a whole new decorating scheme.  The wood should not match the other elements of the room exactly but rather complement it.

Think about the amount of traffic that the room will see if you are installing wood flooring.  A high gloss, darker finish will show wear more quickly and need more maintenance than a low-shine finish on a lighter coloured floor.
