Windows Instead of Walls

Do you have a really nice view that you’d like to take maximum advantage of?  Would you like to make your indoor and outdoor areas flow together more seamlessly?  Consider using large windows instead of a standard wall – you’ll get a view that goes on forever and your living areas will feel so much more open.

Structural Considerations to Consider when Replacing Walls with Windows

The first thing you will need to be aware of is structural considerations.  This is not so much an issue if you are building a new house as the builder or architect will have allowed for the structural differences that come from having a wall that is primarily composed of one or more large windows.  However, if you are renovating an older house, you will need to consult an engineer to find out the best way to support the load that comes down from the roof, when you remove the wall and replace it with a window.  This may be through the use of large support beams or a lintel.

Choosing the Right Type of Glass for your Window

Because you are having what is essentially a new glass wall, you will need to have a look at the type of glass that you choose for the window.  Ideally, the glass will be double glazed to stop too much heat entering or leaving the home.  Ensure that the glass has some kind of UV protection so that you minimise the risk of your window coverings and furniture fading.  Safety glass is also essential, especially if you have children in your household.  The safety glass will offer that extra degree of protection in case of accidents.

Choosing the Type of Window

Will you need your windows to be openable to allow ventilation or is it OK if they are fixed windows?  If you want openable windows, see how much room you have and if it is practical.  Two good windows are sliding windows and double hung windows as they do not open outwards.

If you are just after the extra light that a large window provides but still want to keep your privacy, why not consider building an entire wall out of glass bricks?  These let in heaps of light but their inherent structure means that they are difficult to clearly see through, making them great for apartments or urban areas.
