Kitchen Renovations - What You Need to Know

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house, so careful consideration needs to be given to any kitchen renovation.  The goal is to make the kitchen usable for the next few years at least, so we’ve come up with some things that you should know about kitchen renovations in order to make the process easier for you.

Your Choices

There are essentially two different choices that you can make when renovating your kitchen.  The first is to keep the same layout that you already have.  Keeping the same layout means that you will spend less on the total renovation as you will only have to replace the cupboards, fittings, and appliances.  There is no cost associated with moving the power points or location of the plumbing.

The second option is to completely tear everything out and start from scratch.  You may need to spend more as the plumbing and electricals will likely need to be moved.  However, you will be able to make the most of your kitchen space and get the kitchen of your dreams.

Renovation Considerations

There are several things that you will need to consider when planning your kitchen renovations.  These include:

  • Who will manage your project – a builder or a renovation specialist?
  • Will the space be changed structurally in any way?  If so, allow additional time and room in your budget for this.
  • Is the kitchen to be open plan or part of its own space?
  • What appliances will you need in your new kitchen?
  • How much storage and counter space will you need?
  • Will new electricals be installed? (new power points, new lights etc)
  • Will the floor need to be replaced or resurfaced?
  • What style and colours would you like in your new kitchen?
  • How will you prepare meals/eat while the kitchen is being renovated?

Call in the Professionals

Most kitchen renovations will require the use of professionals.  Some of the most common professionals used include:

Can I DIY?

To save money, it may be possible to perform some aspects of a kitchen renovation yourself.  However, professionals are absolutely necessary in some situations.  These include needing licensed tradespeople to carry out any structural work or any plumbing or electrical work.  You will also need professionals to install the cabinetry, benchtop and flooring in most cases.

Things that you are generally able to do yourself include removing the kitchen fittings, building or installing cabinetry (such as those found in flat-pack kitchens), install simple fittings, painting, sourcing appliances, and sourcing fittings.
