Theming your Home

Whether you want to create a specific theme in your home for use all year round, or are simply decorating for a special event, it is possible to create a theme in your home – and there are heaps to choose from.

Some Examples of Themes

The themes you can use in your home are only as limited as your imagination.  Some examples include:

  • beach
  • nature
  • modern/contemporary
  • country
  • music/movies
  • western
  • Victorian

If you are decorating for a special event, the event itself can become a theme – perfect examples of these include Christmas, Halloween, and Easter.  If it’s for a birthday, your imagination can really run wild – think superhero, villains, the roaring twenties, so on and so forth.

Often the best themes are created when you look at your favourite things and use them as the base.  This could be something that you collect, such as books, dolls, watches, and ornaments, or a hobby that you really enjoy.  Surround yourself with the things that you love.

Creating the Theme

These themes can look fantastic in any area of your home, and they are easy to create with the use of a few different things.  Paint is one of the easiest things to change in your home and careful selection of colours can really help to tie your theme together.  For example, blues and neutrals make the perfect base for a beach theme, while a nature theme can easily be created with the use of earthy hues.  If you’re going Victorian, there are heaps of wallpapers available that will just add that extra touch.

The materials that you use for furnishings will also make a massive difference in your overall theme.  A modern theme looks great with the use of stainless steel and glass, while a country theme looks fantastic with warm woods.  Leather is a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of themes and fabrics can create just about any mood – it’s just about choosing the right texture and pattern.  For example, you wouldn’t want to use florals in a beach or modern theme, but they would look fantastic in a country-feel home.

But it’s not just the materials that you use.  The furniture, soft furnishings, and lighting all make a real difference.  Consider your theme and choose the things that will fit in with it best.  Soft lines and lighting look fantastic in themes that require ambience, while you can get away with sharper lines and more focused lighting in themes that call for minimalism.
