Are you looking for a way to be more energy efficient yet still feel comfortable in summer? Why not consider using solar air conditioning? It’s efficient, environmentally friendly, and your cooling bills will plummet.
The basic premise behind solar air conditioning is that the days where the sun is at its strongest are also the days where the need for air conditioning is at its greatest. Solar cells or photovoltaic panels are located on the roof, usually on the north-facing side. The sun hits these panels which then convert the sunlight into electricity which then powers the air conditioning unit. If you are using less energy than what is actually being produced, the excess energy will be fed into the main power grid and you will actually be given a credit on your next electricity bill.
If the sky is overcast, or it is a cloudy day, you can still use the air conditioner as it can take power from the electricity grid.
Solar air conditioning works through the process of sorption – where a liquid or gaseous substance is attached to a solid, porous material, or taken in by a liquid or solid material. The sorbent, usually silica gel, is heated and then dehumidified. After it has been “dried”, the process is repeated in the opposite direction, with the silica gel being moistened and cooled.
The air conditioning processes are differentiated between a closed refrigerant circulation system, and open system, according to the way in which the process is carried out, that is, if the refrigerant is ever exposed to the atmosphere. Open systems are used for dehumidification and evaporative cooling. Both processes are further classified into liquid or solid sorbents.
Solar air conditioning can be used in many homes. The main requirement is that you have sufficient amounts of sunlight and that you have an ideal roof aspect. The solar air conditioning can be used to cool an individual room or you can choose to have a unit that is capable to cooling multiple zones of the home.
