The backyard pool is a great way to keep cool in summer but it can be very water intensive, especially in today’s challenging water conditions. However, there are ways that you can have a pool and still be water-wise.
Use a Pool Cover
A pool cover is one of the most effective ways to reduce water loss. This is because it minimizes evaporation and thus reduces the need to top up the pool. Where possible, rainwater should be used to fill the pool. Pool covers also help to keep the pool clean, reducing the need to backwash the filter which can waste water. Try to get a pool cover that uses rollers as it will make it much easier and faster to use.
Keep the Correct Water Level
It is important not to overfill or underfill the pool. The water should ideally come to half way up the skimmer opening to ensure that the skimmer operates correctly. If the pool is filled too high, the skimmer does not work as well and water is wasted. Also try not to top up the pool using an automatic top up function (if you have one) so that you are able to see exactly how much water your pool uses. Also, if you have a slow leak in your pool, automatically topping it up will make it harder to detect.
The Right Chemical Balance
The right chemical balance not only saves water but makes the pool more comfortable and hygienic to use. Three levels must be correct – the total alkalinity level, the pH and the amount of sanitizer used. Please see our pool maintenance article for more information. Having the right balance means that you do not need to empty and refill your pool – saving you thousands of litres of water.
Keep the Right Filtration
During summer, the pool’s filtration unit should run for eight to ten hours a day, and when people are using the pool. The filter operates by skimming the surface of the water to remove debris such as dirt, dust and leaves before they have the chance to sink. The filter is then cleansed of the debris by a process known as backwashing, in which the flow of water is reversed through the filter to flush the debris down a drain. The backwashing should only take place until the water in the sight glass is clear or until the drain point is clean. This should only take a minute or two.
