Kids Playrooms

A playroom is the perfect place for a child to have fun and exercise their imaginations, and when it comes to decorating a playroom for your child, the sky really is the limit.  Involving your child in the decorating process will make it a fun project for the both of you, and the child will have pride in the room, making things so much easier when it comes time to clean up!  Here are a few ideas on kids playrooms to get you started.

Flooring for Playrooms

The number one thing to remember is safety and comfort when it comes to selecting flooring for your child’s playroom.  If you plan to have an arts area, durable flooring that is easy to clean such as tiles or vinyl will be invaluable.  The rest of the floor could consist of a durable stain resistant carpet.  If carpeting or recarpeting the existing floor is not practical, then laying down a large area rug is also another good option.

Walls in the Playroom

Kids make messes, and these invariably end up on the wall so you want a wall surface that isn’t going to present a disaster if it gets dirty.  A semi-gloss paint is great as it is easily cleaned with a soapy cloth.  Blackboard paint is another creative option, and it will allow your child to draw on the wall as much as they like.

If you want to choose wallpaper, there are washable wallpapers out there that look great and are surprisingly durable.  Murals are another great option for bringing in a sense of colour and fun, and you can incorporate your child’s favourite objects, toys, or characters into the mural, creating a story right on your wall.

Choosing Playroom Furniture

Lightweight furniture is essential in a child’s playroom as you will be constantly moving it around to make room for all the new and interesting activities and games that your child dreams up.  Use versatile, interesting, and playful furnishings, such as beanbags, inflatable furniture, and plastic.  An added bonus is that these are usually cheap and thus easy to replace as a child’s needs change.  Wooden furniture is also great, especially for older children, but be aware that this is more difficult to rearrange.  Large items that are likely to get years of use such as an entertainment unit or a comfy sofa are worthwhile investments.

Be careful when choosing items such as lamps and decorative objects as children are boisterous and these items can easily become broken.  Ensure that these objects are out of reach – for example, hang pictures on the wall rather than put them in freestanding frames and use overhead lights.

Storage in Playrooms

If there’s one thing that can be said about almost any child it’s that they seem to have a never-ending supply of “stuff”, and this stuff needs to go somewhere!  Use shelving units, window seats or wall units to store items such as books, movies, music, and anything that the child wants to display.  Crates, baskets, storage boxes, and storage bins are perfect for toys as they can simply be tossed in at the end of the day.

Safety in Playrooms

The last thing you want is for your child to be injured in the playroom.  Ensure that any drawers in the room have safety catches on them so that they cannot be pulled out completely.  Check that there are no sharp or rough edges on furniture or any other items.  Heavy objects such as bookcases or shelving units may be best attached to the wall so that children cannot accidentally topple them onto themselves.

Ensure that the playroom itself is situated in a spot where you can easily check in on your children.  Near the living areas is ideal.  You should always be able to see and hear your children.
