Pools - New Trends

With summer coming up, thoughts are turning to spending time outside, and the backyard pool is the perfect way to cool off and have some fun. We’ve spoken to David Moss from Mirage Pools to find out what is hot over the coming summer.

New Trends in Shapes, Materials and Finishes

The most popular shape in pools at the moment is the rectangular formal pool and formal shapes in general. “Pools are getting smaller due to smaller blocks of land and larger houses being built,” says Moss.

Concrete pools are more popular than fiberglass pools due to “the flexibility in shapes, designs and finishes,” according to Moss. As far as colours and finishes go, darker blue colours and Quartzon pool interiors are coming into fashion.

“Lap pools for exercise swimming are now in demand,” says Moss.

The Pool Surrounds

According to Moss, “glass pool fencing is popular due to the architectural style of pools.”
Glass fencing makes an excellent enclosure pools, providing sound attenuation and blocks the wind. Tinted glass can be used to increase the privacy. Of course, all fencing installed should meet your local council’s requirements.

As for the actual pool surrounds, “most people engage a landscaper to do the pool surrounds with paving, feature walls, waterfalls or soft landscaping,” Moss says. The emphasis is on making a feature of the pool as it is the largest and most visual element of the backyard.

Water Requirements

With new regulations in many states about how you can fill or top up your swimming pool, you should contact your local council or state government to find out if you will need a water permit to fill your new pool. Some governments will also require you to have a water storage tank for topping up the pool.
