Lighting Your Garden

Lighting is an essential element to any garden you wish to utilise as an outdoor living area. Lighting can highlight aspects of the garden creating atmosphere and ambiance. Different lighting techniques include:

Up lighting involves setting a light at the base of a plant, pointing up in order to light the trunk of a tree or the side of a house.

Shadowing occurs when you use light to create a shadow from an object onto a feature wall, fence or line of foliage.

Silhouetting involves placing a light behind an object to create a silhouette in front.

Spread lighting is installed to give emphasis to low lying plants, shrubs and groundcover through the use of low lights.

Path lighting is most commonly used to keep a thoroughfare safe to use throughout the night.

Spotlighting can bring emphasis to features you have in your garden and highlight plants.

Water feature lighting can be useful to draw attention to a water feature in the garden at night. This can be done by either installing a light within the feature or shining light onto the water.

Remember it is essential to have a qualified electrician to check the power supply you are using for outside lighting and to install the necessary power points or connections as needed. Be careful plan the cabling, wattage, transformers and other accessories necessary with a qualified and experiences supplier.
