The laundry is often one of the smallest rooms in the house but it also one of the most used, so it makes sense to carefully plan your laundry renovation so that the room is as useful and as efficient as it can be. Here are some tips.
During the design process, there are some things that you will need to consider. The first of these will be what you use the laundry for. As well as washing clothes, will you need space for sorting, folding and ironing clothes? Will you need room to dry your clothes in bad weather? Also take into account the appliances that you will have in the laundry. Most laundries will have a washing machine and a dryer, but some also have provisions for a small sewing area for making repairs and the like.
The budget is also an important consideration, especially if you will be using a professional such an architect or a builder to help you plan the space. When renovating the laundry, will the space need to be altered structurally or will you need to move the plumbing? These can see the costs increase exponentially so it may be best to leave the plumbing where it is wherever practicable. Decide whether your laundry will need extra ventilation – after all, it is a wet area and any build up of moisture can lead to mould and possibly even structural damage. For this reason also, it is important to ensure that the room is correctly waterproofed.
When you are renovating your laundry, you want to make sure that there is adequate room for you to carry out your tasks. Do not group the washing machine and dryer too close together; as you may find it difficult to open doors, or in the case of the dryer mounted above the washing machine, you can even hit your head if it is mounted too low.
Ensure that you choose suitable fittings – untreated wood, matte paint and slippery floors are all generally bad ideas in a laundry. Also ensure that your drainage is adequate.
It is possible to complete a laundry renovation project yourself but in many cases, you will need the services of a professional. Some professionals that may be of help include:
With any professional that you hire, ensure that they have the appropriate licenses, are insured, and are fully qualified.
