What is Involved in Relocating My Kitchen?

Feb 20, 2012 by

Topic: Kitchen Renovation

If your kitchen is just no longer doing it for you and using it has become a huge chore, why put up with it? You can get the kitchen of your dreams just by moving it to somewhere else in your home, putting it in a more pleasant location and making it a pleasure to use at the same time.  Read on for more.

Why Relocate Your Kitchen?

There are several reasons why you may want to relocate your kitchen.  Perhaps your existing kitchen is in a dark and poky location and it’s just too small for what you need on a day to day basis.  Maybe you are adding an extension onto your home and it makes sense to move your kitchen closer to your new living and dining areas.  If you’ve just built a fantastic outdoors area, moving the kitchen closer to this can be much more practical and save you walking through your home with heavily laden plates of food.  Another reason for relocating your kitchen may be that it actually has a very poor layout, so you’re better off scrapping it and moving it to somewhere else altogether.

Ensuring Your New Kitchen Works for You

Part of the reason for relocating a kitchen is to make sure that you get a new kitchen that works best for you.  This is why it is vital in the design stage to think about everything that you could possibly want in your kitchen as it is much easier to put things in as it is being built, not afterwards.  Some things that may work for you include:

  • Appliances – ovens, stovetops, dishwashers, rangehoods, and so on

  • Island – these are surprisingly versatile and can be used for storage, as a food prep area, as a breakfast bar and more. Islands can be fixed or mobile

  • Cabinetry – the cabinetry in your kitchen is absolutely vital and you want to make sure that you can easily access all the items that they contain.  Overhead cupboards can be made more user friendly with lift up cupboards, and things such as soft closing door and drawer mechanisms and pull out shelving can be more ergonomical

  • Benchtops – look for benchtops that suit your style of cooking and the amount of maintenance that you are prepared to do. Just some of your choices include laminate, Corian, acrylic, stone, timber, stainless steel and concrete

What is Involved in Relocating a Kitchen?

Relocating a kitchen is actually a very complicated and costly exercise, so you need to be sure that your benefits will outweigh the costs that you will incur.  Some of these costs include:

  • Ripping out the old kitchen – removing cabinetry, disconnecting appliances, capping and plumbing that is no longer needed, etc

  • Converting the old kitchen space – when moving your kitchen, you’ll have the old space left behind and you’ll have to think about the costs of repairing any damaged walls, replacing the flooring, changing light fixtures, repainting, and so on to convert the old space into a usable area

  • Plumbing – if your kitchen is in a whole new part of the home, you’ll have to have a licensed plumber run all new plumbing to the space for the sink, dishwasher, and so on.  The cost of doing this depends on factors such as the type of plumbing used (copper vs. PVC), how far the pipes have to be run, how many things have to be plumbed in, and so on

  • New materials – when you are relocating your kitchen, you’ll have to fork out for new
materials such as new flooring, new windows, new cabinetry and benchtops and new appliances.  In some cases, you can cut costs by recycling what you already had in your old kitchen if it is still in good condition or you can keep your eyes open for bargains if you are buying new
