The toilet is one of the most used fixtures in the house and as such, it can be one of the biggest water users. However, there are ways that you can reduce the amount of water that your toilet uses and one of the best is by using water saving toilet cisterns. Here’s what you need to know.
One of the best ways to save water through your toilet cistern is by using a dual flush toilet. These toilets have two flush buttons – a half flush and a full flush, where the half flush is used for urine and the full flush used for solid waste. The half flush can use 3 litres or less of water and the full flush uses 6 litres or less. This is a huge improvement on single flush toilets which use up to 12 litres of water for every flush. If you cannot install a dual flush toilet for whatever reason, placing a full bottle of water or something similar in your toilet cistern will stop it filling as full, meaning you’ll use less water each flush. There are also flush regulators which work by only flushing the toilet while the button is being held down.
You may not have ever heard of this before but a truly innovative product that really helps to save water is the combined hand basin and toilet cistern. How it works is that when you are washing your hands, the grey water from doing so drains directly into the toilet cistern and you then use it to flush your toilet. This can drastically reduce the amount of water that you use (by up to 40,000 litres a year!), and it’ll certainly remind your family members to be more hygienic – after all, if they don’t wash their hands, there’s no water to flush the toilet with! You also won’t be wasting clean tap water by literally flushing it down the drain.
