Are you looking for something different to use as a feature wall in your home? Why not consider using glass? Glass is no longer confined to the standard splashbacks – it can now be used on entire walls, creating a unique feature that looks absolutely fantastic.
Glass feature walls can be created from glass sheets, glass mosaic tiles, or even from mirror tiles. It is also possible to create your own design to be printed onto glass sheeting – perfect if you have a particular theme in mind, or do not wish to have a solid expanse of smooth glass.
Glass feature walls have the advantage of being easy to clean, and they have no grout joints, making them a very hygienic option – great for allergy sufferers! Generally, you will not be able to have a single panel of glass on your feature wall. This is due to the logistics of getting the glass into your home, and also for safety reasons. The glass panels however, can come as large as 3600mm long and 2100 mm high.
Always use safety glass on your feature walls. Safety glass is toughened to Australian standards, and you will not have to worry about the glass cracking under accidental knocks or bumps. Safety glass is also more heat resistant than standard glass.
Glass can be used to make a feature wall on a variety of surfaces, as long as the wall is flat and does not have any protrusions. Surfaces that you can use glass on include tiles, MDF, concrete, and Gyprock.
The best thing about choosing glass as your feature wall is that you can choose just about any colour possible as glass companies are able to match the colour that you choose. Remember, however, that all glass contains a certain amount of iron, and the iron will give the glass a green tinge. There are some types of glass available that have less iron than standard glass, and this is ideal if you are trying to match a tricky colour, as the glass will have a much less obvious green tinge to it.
As well as having a huge range of colours to choose from, it is also possible to have a sparkle finish applied, for a truly unique look. Many glass coatings, which provide the colour, are also non transparent, meaning that small defects on your wall will be covered up for a completely smooth finish.
Glass brick walls are another option when it comes to creating glass feature walls. Glass bricks are fantastic for increasing the feeling of space as well as the amount of natural light entering a room, as well as offering security and privacy – it is almost impossible to see through glass bricks. The advantages of having a glass brick wall in your home include:
