A running toilet can seem like a minor problem but you should get it fixed as soon as possible as it can be annoying, waste lots of water and actually cost you a lot of money. Here’s what you need to know.
While you might think that a running toilet is just an inconvenience - hearing the noise of constantly running water can be enough to send even the most tolerant of people around the bend. Not to mention, all that running water will soon add up, sending your water bills skyrocketing and also wasting many litres of precious water.
A running toilet can also cause health tissues as a running toilet can mean that toilet germs are constantly released into the air. Running toilets can also cause mould to start growing.
To check if a running toilet is your problem, it is as simple as placing a few drops of food colouring into the cistern. If the water in the bowl is coloured after a few minutes, then you have a running toilet.
There are some common causes of a running toilet. The most common is that the seal has been broken on the valve that lets water flow into the bowl. This could be due to a worn ball cock or chain. This valve is called the inlet valve and if this is the problem, the valve should be replaced altogether. A new outlet valve washer should also be fitted at the same time. Any parts that are affecting the inlet valve should also be replaced.
To fix a running toilet, you should always engage the services of a plumber. They will be able to diagnose the problem quickly and fix it quickly and with the correct parts. Remember that even though you might think it’s easy to fix yourself, plumbers are responsible for protecting the water supply and are the ones that should do the work by law. Ensure that your plumber is correctly licensed, registered and insured and that they have plenty of experience behind them. By all means look for a reasonable quote but keep in mind that getting the job done right the first time is more important than saving a few dollars.
