Bathrooms - Family Friendly

Do you have a bathroom that needs to be functional for everyone from the kids to the grandparents? It’s easy to make the bathroom family friendly as most items needed to do so can be retrofitted, saving the cost of an expensive bathroom re-build or renovation. We’ve spoken to Colin Opwald, Managing Director, Pivotech, at Australian Bathroom Creations for some tips.

Safety

To make a bathroom truly family friendly, safety measures must be implemented for both children and elderly family members alike. Opwald says, “Always ensure that the floor tiles are of a non slip finish. Handles in the shower should be installed for the elderly and all family members should be taught not to turn on the water at full volume.”

Young children should also not have easy access to taps and the hot water temperature should be regulated to reduce the risk of burns and scalds. If medicines or other chemicals are stored in the bathroom, it is vital that children cannot reach these.

Heat the Bathroom

Opwald believes that the most important facility for the bathroom to have is a means of heat.

“A central heating outlet under the towel rack will dry towels overnight and at the same time keep the bathroom inviting in winter. Floor heating is probably the best method of heating for the bathroom.”

Generally heated towel rails can be easily wall-mounted and are available in many different designs and sizes.

Make the Bathroom Child Friendly

Making the bathroom child friendly is a challenge that many parents face. Permanent fixtures such as tiles will date eventually “therefore towels and bathmats for kids are the best way to make bathrooms interesting. The décor can then be changed as the children age,” Opwald advises.

Also allow children to have toys as this will make bathtime more fun for them, and less stressful for you! Toys can be stored away when not in use.

Storage

Storage space is also an important consideration. More storage space can be gained by a vanity and/or shelving that is well-designed to be both useful and ornamental.

Use towel racks and clothes hampers that are easily accessible to children so that they feel like they are helping you during bathtime. Towel racks should be securely fastened to walls.

Water Efficiency

It is still possible to be water efficient when you have children. “The selection of the shower rose is paramount in any bathroom as they not only save water but at the same time reduce leakage. It is only a matter of getting used to the lighter water volume and that does not take long,” Opwald recommends.
