Exhaust fans are a necessity in every home, and are most often installed in the kitchen and the bathroom. But why are they so important? Read on to learn more.
What are Exhaust Fans?Exhaust fans are mechanical ventilation devices that draw out stale, impure, moist air from the home and replace it with fresh air. Exhaust fans need to be ventilated to the outside of the home, not into ceiling or roof spaces. If not correctly ventilated to the outside, the air remains trapped and can cause problems with odour, and dampness.
There are different types of exhaust fans, depending on your needs. Ceiling mounted exhaust fans are installed into the ceiling and expel the air upwards through the roof. The fan itself is connected to ducting, so that the air is exhausted to the outside of the home via an external vent, like a roof cap or soffit exhaust vents.
Inline exhaust fans, unlike ceiling exhaust fans that are installed straight into the ceiling, are typically mounted in between ducting. So, if you wanted to ventilate an area that did not have the clearance or space for a ceiling exhaust fan, you would use an inline fan to ventilate such areas. The inline exhaust fan is placed between the ductwork and the stale air travels through the ducts and ultimately leaves the home. They are ideal for areas where you can’t or don’t want to install the exhaust fan directly. They can be single port or multi port.
Wall mounted exhaust fans are installed on walls. Because they are installed on exterior walls and not the interior walls, no ductwork is needed, as the air has a direct route to the outside of the home. Combination exhaust fans, as the name suggests, come in a variety of different combinations such as a fan-light combination, or heat-fan-light combination all in the one unit. These are fantastic for bathrooms.
Exterior remote mounted exhaust fans are installed outside of the home and pull out the old air instead of it being pushed out. These fans are great as no matter how noisy they are, most of the noise stays outside of the home. Kitchen range exhaust fans are mounted inside the range hood over your kitchen stove. The purpose of these fans is to rid the kitchen of stale air, cooking smells, and also any moisture.
Exhaust fans are very beneficial in the home for a number of reasons. They rid the air of pollutants such as harmful gases, smoke, pet dander, dust mites, paint fumes, and grease, making the air much cleaner and healthier. The fans also get rid of moisture in the air. If not correctly ventilated from the home, these pollutants and moisture can cause problems such as:
For the exhaust fan to work efficiently and provide your home with these benefits, it needs to be correctly sized. Ensure that the fan is large enough to ventilate the air in the chosen room correctly.
